Epupa Falls — Kunene River Cascade and Mopane Canyon Viewpoint
Epupa Falls is the real deal — a series of tiered cascades where the Kunene River plunges roughly 37 metres through a fractured basalt gorge draped in ancient baobabs and mopane woodland. The spray feeds a pocket of green so intense it feels wrong in this parched corner of the Kaokoland. Himba settlements dot the riverside. The light at dusk turns the whole gorge copper, and if you stand on the rim long enough you’ll see kingfishers working the mist below. This is also a genuine crocodile habitat — don’t swim casually.
The access track from Opuwo via the D3700 is around 170 km of corrugated dirt and sandy washes — proper 4WD, high clearance, and recovery gear required. No fuel past Opuwo. The track degrades significantly in the wet season (November–March). Mobile signal is essentially nonexistent once you leave Opuwo. Verify current road conditions with locals before committing.
