Otjihipa Mountains — Kaokoland Escarpment Ridge Viewpoint
The Otjihipa Mountains form a dramatic escarpment between Opuwo and the Marienfluss Valley, rising sharply out of the surrounding mopane scrub. From the ridgeline, you’re looking across a crumpled, near-roadless wilderness of dry river gorges, communal Himba grazing land, and dust-red plains rolling toward the Kunene River. It’s harsh, remote, and genuinely stunning. No fences, no interpretive signs, no other tourists — just rocks, wind, and the odd Himba cattle track crossing your path.
Access is via rough 4WD tracks that deteriorate significantly after rain. The route from Opuwo toward Marienfluss passes through or near the mountains depending on the line you take. High-clearance 4WD with low-range is non-negotiable. Fuel up fully in Opuwo before heading out — there is nothing resembling a petrol station once you leave town. Dry season (May–October) only for most rigs.
Kaokoland's wild high escarpment — earned views.
