Kluane Lake to Burwash Landing — Duke River Flats Road

Glacial outwash, grizzlies, and zero crowds.

Moderate

Most people blow past this stretch on the Alaska Highway without stopping, which means they miss one of the most spectacular gravel-road detours in the southwest Yukon. The Duke River Flats Road branches west off the highway north of Kluane Lake and drops you onto wide glacial outwash benches where the Duke River braids its way out of the St. Elias foothills. Dust, gravel washboard, and periodic mud stretches after rain keep your hands busy, and the Kluane Range looms to the southwest in a way that makes you feel genuinely small. Watch for grizzlies working the river bars — this is prime habitat year-round.

This is a moderate gravel run that a capable stock 4WD handles fine in dry conditions, but wet weather turns the clay sections slick fast. High clearance is mandatory. No bridges cross the Duke River proper, so don’t attempt a full crossing without scouting. No permit required. Fuel at Destruction Bay before you leave. Cell service is nonexistent. Best season is June through September. You get sweeping Kluane views, serious bear country, and the feeling that you actually earned the scenery instead of just photographing it through a windshield.
