Huron-Manistee National Forest Lumberman’s Monument Dispersed Sites
Peaceful dispersed camping scattered along the Au Sable River corridor near the historic Lumberman’s Monument in Michigan’s Huron-Manistee National Forest. Sites are nestled among towering white and red pines on sandy soil that drains well after rain. The Au Sable provides excellent fishing and canoeing opportunities, with several informal river access points. Most sites accommodate one or two vehicles with natural screening between neighbors.
Access via Forest Road 4001 and connecting two-tracks that can be soft sand in dry conditions. Popular with canoeists during summer weekends and hunters in fall. Mosquitoes and blackflies can be intense May through July. No facilities — bring water and practice Leave No Trace principles in this recovering forest ecosystem.
