Huron National Forest South Branch Au Sable River Dispersed Sites
A dozen informal sites scattered along three miles of the South Branch Au Sable River via Forest Road 4001. Mix of riverside and elevated sites under red pine and oak. River runs clear and cold year-round — excellent for swimming and fishing. Most sites fit 1-2 vehicles with established fire rings and worn tent pads.
Sandy access roads handle most vehicles when dry but can be challenging after rain. Popular with canoeists and fishermen during summer weekends, but plenty of space to spread out. Pack out all trash — forest service patrols regularly. Road gated during firebird nesting season (April-July) but foot access remains open.
