Huron National Forest Mack Lake Backcountry Dispersed Sites
Mack Lake sits deep in the national forest, reachable only by a winding 3-mile sand trail that keeps the crowds away. Five primitive sites ring the north shore, each with direct lake access and established fire rings. The clear water is perfect for swimming and fishing (bass and pike), while towering pines provide natural windbreaks. Sites accommodate RVs up to 25 feet, but soft sand requires aired-down tires and steady momentum.
Trail begins at the Mack Lake Forest Road gate — look for the small USFS sign. Summer weekends see occasional ATV traffic, but most of the time you’ll share the lake only with loons and eagles. Bring mosquito protection in June and July. No cell service, no potable water, no trash service. This is true backcountry camping an hour from civilization.
