Huron National Forest Sand Lake ORV Trail

Michigan's deepest sand and steepest climbs

Difficult

The Sand Lake ORV Trail system covers 2,800 acres of the Huron National Forest’s most technical terrain, where glacial sand deposits create dunes up to 80 feet high. This isn’t your typical Michigan forest drive – loose sand, steep climbs with 40-degree angles, and washouts from spring snowmelt create conditions that challenge even modified rigs. The trail system connects to the historic Lumberman’s Monument, built in 1931 to honor the area’s logging heritage, and passes through stands of jack pine and oak that have somehow survived decades of off-road traffic.

Rated difficult to expert depending on conditions, this trail demands proper sand tires, recovery gear, and ideally a winch for the steeper climbs. Summer offers the most stable sand conditions, but expect crowds on weekends. The trail requires a valid Michigan ORV sticker and stays busy with ATVs, so respect trail etiquette and yield appropriately. Camping is available at nearby Sand Lake but fills quickly during peak season. You’ll get a workout for both driver and vehicle in Michigan’s answer to a desert playground.
