Pismo Beach to Oceano Dunes OHV Area

Drive on the beach legally in California

Easy

The Oceano Dunes is one of the few places in California where you can legally drive a street vehicle directly onto the beach and camp on sand dunes overlooking the Pacific. This 1,500-acre OHV area stretches from Pismo Beach south to the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, offering everything from casual beach cruising to technical hill climbs on massive sand mountains. The Grand Dunes area features towering peaks that challenge even experienced sand drivers, while Butterfly Grove provides easier access for stock vehicles.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on how deep you venture into the dunes. Any vehicle can access the beach, but sand driving experience helps avoid getting stuck. 4WD, lowered tire pressure, and a shovel are essential for dune exploration. Best visited fall through spring when temperatures are mild and ATV crowds lighter. Day-use and overnight camping permitted with proper passes. Brings recovery gear and plenty of water — the sand reflects heat intensely and dehydration hits fast even on mild days.
