Pismo Dunes to Oceano — Nipomo Mesa Coastal Sand Run

California's last driveable Pacific beach.

Difficult

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is one of the last places in California where you can legally drive on the beach, and it earns that distinction with 5.5 miles of open Pacific coastline and a massive dune complex stretching inland toward the Nipomo Mesa. Enter off Pier Avenue in Oceano and you’re immediately on hard-packed beach sand, wind-sculpted berms stacking up to your left, the Pacific hammering the shore to your right. Push deeper into the dune field and the terrain gets serious fast — steep faces, soft blow-sand bowls, and blind crests that will bury the unprepared without a second thought. The Underwater Canyon staging area is the hub where most rigs air down and commit to the interior.

This is a sand specialist’s game. Stock 4WD with proper aired-down tires (10-12 psi) handles the beach corridor, but attacking the interior dunes demands lockers, experienced throttle control, and ideally a high-lift jack and tow strap. An SVRA day-use fee is required; annual passes available. Peak season is spring through fall — summer weekends are a circus of ATVs and side-by-sides, so midweek visits are worth planning for. Fuel in Oceano. No water in the dunes themselves. This isn’t backcountry solitude — it’s raw coastal horsepower on sand, and it delivers exactly that.
