Huron National Forest Silver Creek Trail System

Technical sand and root challenges in Lower Michigan

Difficult

Silver Creek cuts through some of Huron National Forest’s most challenging terrain, where the trail system connects ORV routes 14, 15, and 23 through deep sand pockets and root-bound creek crossings. The main loop follows old logging roads from the 1920s, passing the historic Civilian Conservation Corps camp foundations near Silver Creek proper before climbing through jack pine stands to the Highbanks overlook. The notorious ‘Washing Machine’ section at mile marker 12 has claimed more than a few oil pans on the jagged limestone creek bed.

Difficult terrain requiring experienced drivers and proper equipment—aired-down tires, recovery gear, and skid plates are essential. The deep sand will bog down anything without momentum, while the root sections demand careful tire placement and steady throttle control. Summer months offer the best conditions, though mosquitoes can be savage. Fall riding provides excellent colors but watch for hunting seasons. Multiple primitive camping areas along the route, plus Silver Creek offers decent trout fishing if you pack a rod.
