White River National Forest Road System
Sandy forest roads through Michigan's lumber heritage
The White River road system snakes through 40 miles of Michigan’s forgotten backcountry where homesteaders once tried to farm sandy soil and lost. These forest service roads follow old section lines and logging spurs through second-growth forest, connecting ghost farmsteads with cellar holes and rusted farm equipment. The highlight is the old Newaygo Shingle Mill site where massive sawdust piles still mark where white pine became roofing material for half the Midwest.
Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though spring mud can upgrade things quickly. Open year-round but best accessed June through September when the sand roads firm up. No permits required and dispersed camping is allowed throughout. Bring your own water and expect zero cell service once you leave the main forest roads. This is Michigan overlanding at its most authentic – quiet forests, forgotten history, and roads that actually go somewhere worth seeing.
