Altamaha River Blackwater Swamp Circuit
Georgia's Amazon river swamp adventure
The Altamaha River Blackwater Swamp Circuit follows elevated sand roads through one of Georgia’s last great river swamps, where 300-year-old cypress trees tower over tea-colored water. This route traces old logging trams from the 1920s timber boom, passing abandoned mill sites and crossing dozens of dark-water sloughs via wooden bridges. The circuit connects multiple Wildlife Management Areas along Georgia’s second-largest river system.
Easy to moderate depending on recent rains — high-clearance recommended but 4WD not always necessary. Wet season (June-September) can flood low sections; winter offers best access and fewer bugs. No permits required for the roads, but camping needs WMA regulations compliance. Bring bug spray, water, and fuel from Jesup — services are 50+ miles apart. What you discover is Georgia’s Amazon, complete with alligators, wild hogs, and some of the state’s most pristine wilderness.
