Altamaha Wildlife Management Area Sand Hills Trail

Deep sand through longleaf cathedral country

Difficult

The Sand Hills Trail cuts 14 miles through Altamaha WMA’s longleaf pine restoration area, following old logging roads and firebreaks across terrain that hasn’t changed much since Sherman’s march. The deep sand gets treacherous after mile 4 where the trail drops into the Altamaha River bottoms, but the real challenge comes at Confederate Earthworks Ridge where you’ll climb a 200-foot sand hill so steep that momentum becomes your friend. Wild turkeys scatter ahead of your bumper, and the old-growth longleaf pines tower overhead like cathedral columns.

This is 4WD-only territory—the sand will swallow anything without serious traction aids. Air down to 15 psi minimum, and bring a shovel because everybody gets stuck eventually. Hunting seasons close the area periodically, so check WMA schedules before heading out. Summer heat makes this miserable, but spring and fall offer perfect weather for exploring the remnants of Georgia’s original coastal ecosystem. Come for solitude and a taste of what this country looked like before the loggers arrived.
