Ohoopee River Sand Hills WMA Road Network

Deep sand challenges in longleaf pine country

Moderate

The Ohoopee River Sand Hills contain Georgia’s most surprising off-road challenge—deep sand that’ll humble any cocky mountain wheeler within the first quarter-mile. This 26,000-acre Wildlife Management Area preserves the last significant longleaf pine ecosystem in the state, with a network of old logging roads and fire breaks that wind through sand hills up to 200 feet high. The main challenge isn’t technical rock work but maintaining momentum through sugar-fine sand that can swallow a truck to the axles faster than you can say “air down.” The Fire Tower Loop offers the best overview of this unique ecosystem.

Moderate difficulty if you understand sand driving—air down to 15 PSI, engage 4WD, and never stop on an uphill. Stock vehicles with decent tires can handle most routes, but recovery straps and a shovel are mandatory gear. Hunting seasons close many roads October through January, and summer heat makes this place miserable. Best visited March through May during wildflower season, when the restored longleaf savannas bloom with rare native plants found nowhere else in Georgia. Pack extra water—this sandy country will dehydrate you faster than mountain air.
