Savannah River Site Road A Security Perimeter Trail

Cold War nuclear site perimeter through pristine habitat

Easy

Road A traces the outer security boundary of the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site, a sprawling 310-square-mile nuclear facility that’s been locked away from public access since 1950. This gravel perimeter road cuts through some of South Carolina’s most pristine lowland habitat — bottomland hardwoods, Carolina bays, and longleaf pine savannas that haven’t seen development in over 70 years. Wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and even wild hogs wander freely across the track, while the occasional concrete security tower reminds you this isn’t your typical forest road.

Easy to moderate difficulty on maintained gravel surfaces, suitable for any high-clearance vehicle. Special use permits required through DOE — this isn’t a drive-up-and-go situation. Tours run sporadically through the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, typically spring and fall. No camping allowed, obviously. It’s a unique glimpse into what happens when humans abandon 300 square miles of prime Southern habitat for half a century — nature takes it back with a vengeance.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Tacoma or crossover SUV handle this trail?

Yes — the surface is maintained gravel and the elevation change is minimal at 200 feet over 28 miles. Any 2WD high-clearance vehicle handles it fine; a Subaru Outback or stock Tacoma is more than enough.

Is Road A open year-round or does it close seasonally?

Access is available year-round, but this is DOE-managed restricted land — closures can happen with zero notice for security or operational reasons unrelated to weather. Call ahead before driving out.

What permit or access approval do you actually need to get in here?

This is a restricted U.S. Department of Energy site — public access requires prior authorization and is not a show-up-and-drive situation. Contact the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (srel.uga.edu) or the DOE Savannah River Site directly to understand current public access options.

What's the hardest part of this trail and what should I actually expect?

There's no genuinely hard section — it's a flat gravel perimeter road. The challenge is bureaucratic, not mechanical: navigating access restrictions and staying within authorized areas on a federally controlled nuclear site.

Is there any gas or services along the route, or do I need to top off in Aiken first?

There are zero services on or near the route — this is a remote, restricted federal buffer zone. Top off fuel in Aiken before you go; the nearest town is roughly 15-20 miles out.
