Hickory Knob State Resort Park Boundary Road Technical Loop
Technical state park boundary challenge.
This 8-mile fire road network circles the remote boundary of Hickory Knob State Resort Park, climbing steep ridges above Strom Thurmond Lake with technical descents to Lick Fork Creek. The route follows old CCC roads from the 1930s, passing through mixed hardwood forest and pine plantations with several unmarked creek crossings that can turn treacherous after heavy rains. Turkey hunters know these roads well, but most visitors stick to the main park roads and miss the challenging backcountry terrain.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions — articulation and low-range essential for the steeper climbs and loose gravel descents. Rock sliders recommended for the creek crossings where granite outcrops create technical challenges. Best tackled October through March when hunting seasons allow access and creek levels stay manageable. No dispersed camping allowed within park boundaries, but developed sites available at the main campground. Expect spotty cell coverage on the ridges.
