Klondike Loop — Bonanza Creek Road to Dredge No. 4 National Historic Site

Ground zero of the Klondike Gold Rush.

Moderate

Bonanza Creek Road runs south from Dawson City into the valley where George Carmack, Skookum Jim, and Dawson Charlie changed North American history in August 1896. The gravel road follows the creek bottom past working placer mines — you’ll see active sluice boxes, cut banks, and tailings piles stretching for miles — before arriving at the Parks Canada-managed Dredge No. 4, the largest wooden-hull gold dredge in North America. The road continues past the Eldorado Creek junction toward King Solomon Dome, where panoramic views of the Klondike watershed open up at roughly 1,050 metres elevation. Watch for soft creek crossings mid-route and loose gravel on the upper dome approach.

This is a moderate high-clearance gravel run — a capable 4WD truck or SUV handles it fine in dry conditions, but wet weather turns the dome approach slick fast. Best run June through September; the dome road can stay snowbound into early June. No permit required for the road itself, but respect the active mining claims on either side — do not leave the road corridor. Fuel in Dawson City; no services on route. Cell service drops to zero past the first kilometre. Worth every kilometre for the gold rush immersion alone.
