Dawson City to Forty Mile River Road — Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Gold Country

Pre-Klondike gold country, mostly forgotten.

Moderate

Most overlanders heading out of Dawson City turn south toward the Top of the World Highway or east up the Klondike. Fewer know that the track running northwest along the Forty Mile River existed before the 1898 stampede — this was the original Yukon gold country, where American prospectors worked the creeks as early as 1886. The route departs Dawson and pushes northwest, following the Yukon River briefly before cutting overland to the Forty Mile River canyon. The canyon walls are dramatic and undervisited; the river runs jade-green in summer and the canyon walls hold iron-stained sedimentary layers worth stopping to look at. Creek crossings at Walker Fork and Fortymile proper are the route’s serious obstacles — both require scouting.

Moderate to difficult depending on season and recent weather. A stock 4WD with high clearance will handle it in late summer dry conditions, but a lifted rig with lockers is the smarter call if you’re heading deep into the canyon or pushing on to the historic Forty Mile townsite. Fuel is in Dawson City — fill every container you have. No services, no cell signal, and no other traffic to bail you out. Best window is July through September. This is First Nations territory; travel respectfully, leave nothing behind, and treat the historic structures you’ll encounter — old cabins, sluice remnants — as the irreplaceable artifacts they are.
