San Isidro de El General to Chirripó Summit Access Route

Mountain ascent to Costa Rica's highest peak access

Difficult

From San Isidro de El General, this mountain route climbs relentlessly through the Talamanca range to reach the trailhead for Chirripó Peak, Costa Rica’s highest point at 3,820 meters. The road passes through distinct climate zones — from coffee farms at 700 meters to oak forests and finally páramo grasslands where frosts occur year-round. Key waypoints include the village of San Gerardo de Rivas and the ranger station at 2,400 meters where the vehicle access ends and foot trails begin to the summit.

Difficult rating reflects steep grades, loose gravel switchbacks, and high altitude that can affect both vehicle and driver performance. Requires 4WD with low-range gearing and good brakes for the descent. Dry season (December-April) offers best access, though mountain weather changes rapidly even then. Base camping available at San Gerardo, but most make this a long day push from the lowlands. The reward is accessing the only place in Costa Rica where you can see both Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea on clear days.
