Lonesome Highway — Seedskadee to South Pass via the Oregon Trail Desert Corridor

Oregon Trail ghost road across the divide.

Moderate

The high desert between the Green River and South Pass is one of the most historically loaded pieces of ground in the American West, and almost nobody drives it anymore. This route picks up near Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge south of Farson, threads through the sagebrush sea of the Great Divide Basin, and climbs onto the broad, windswept saddle where an estimated 400,000 emigrants crossed the Continental Divide on the Oregon, California, and Mormon trails. You’ll pass Register Cliff equivalents in miniature — sandstone outcrops with names scratched by forgotten hands — and drop into South Pass City State Historic Site, a remarkably preserved 1860s gold camp with original structures still standing. The route runs roughly 70 miles on BLM two-track and county gravel, with the Atlantic City Road junction serving as a key mid-route waypoint.

Difficulty is moderate — flat terrain but soft sand and alkali sections punish low-clearance rigs and eat tires. High-clearance 4WD is the minimum; aired-down tires to 25 psi are strongly recommended in the basin. No water exists between Farson and South Pass City — carry at least 10 gallons. Cell service is essentially zero. Best season is June through September; spring brings mud that’ll bury you. No permit required. BLM dispersed camping throughout the basin. This is a slow, reflective drive — not a rock-crawl — and the payoff is proportional to how seriously you take the history under your wheels.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle this trail, or do I need a lifted rig?

A stock high-clearance 4WD like a Tacoma or 4Runner is the minimum — this trail is rated moderate, not a rock crawl, but soft sand sections and rutted two-track will punish low-clearance vehicles. A lift helps on the sandy stretches but isn't mandatory if you air down.

When does this route typically open and close each year?

June through September is the reliable window. Spring mud and late-season snow can make the alkali flats impassable — wet alkali is like grease and will swallow a rig fast. Don't push it before mid-May or after October without checking conditions with the BLM Rock Springs Field Office first.

Do I need a permit to run this route or camp out here?

No permit required for the BLM sections — dispersed camping is free on public land. South Pass City State Historic Site at the end has a small entry fee if you want to tour the historic buildings. No reservation system, just show up.

What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?

The sandy, windswept flats between Seedskadee and Farson are where most people get surprised — loose sand can grab tires and slow progress significantly. Air down to 20 psi or less before you hit those sections. The route isn't technically difficult, but the remoteness and soft surface are the real challenge.

How far is it between fuel stops, and is there water along the route?

Farson, WY is your last reliable fuel — top off there before heading north, as the 70-mile route has nothing. There is no potable water on the trail itself, so carry all you need for the full run plus a buffer; the Green River at Seedskadee is the only natural water source and needs treatment.
