BLM Fossil Butte Dispersed Area

Dispersed Camping

Scattered primitive sites on BLM land surrounding Fossil Butte National Monument, offering views of the sedimentary cliffs that yield world-class Eocene fossils. Sites are simply clearings in the sagebrush with room for rigs up to 40 feet. The area sits at 7,200 feet elevation, so nights are cool even in summer. No fire restrictions outside of red flag days, but wood is nonexistent — bring your own or stick to camp stoves.

Access via well-maintained gravel roads from US-30. The area can handle any vehicle, though high winds are common on the exposed plateau. Popular with fossil hunters and astronomers due to dark skies. Snow closes access November through March.
