Killpecker Sand Dunes — BLM Dispersed Camping
Killpecker Sand Dunes stretch roughly 55 miles across the Red Desert north of Rock Springs. They are among the longest active dune systems on the continent. BLM manages the open OHV area, and dispersed camping is allowed on the flats around the dune field. There are no developed sites, no water and no services, just sand, sage and a lot of sky. Wild horses roam the region, and the Boars Tusk volcanic plug is a landmark out there. Expect wind, so stake everything down. Summer days run hot and nights drop cold even in July.
Access is by dirt and gravel county and BLM roads off the highway system. They are fine when dry but can get greasy and rutted after rain, and soft sand will bury an underprepared rig. Air down and carry a recovery strap. The usual 14-day BLM limit applies. Bring all your water, check current fire restrictions, and stay inside the designated OHV boundaries. Cell service is spotty at best. Have a dirty day.
