Green River to Flaming Gorge Backway

Desert crossing through Wyoming's outlaw country.

Moderate

This backcountry route cuts through the Red Desert between Green River and Flaming Gorge, following old ranch roads and sheep trails across some of Wyoming’s most desolate terrain. The track winds through Red Canyon’s sandstone walls and crosses Bitter Creek multiple times, passing abandoned homesteads and the remains of old sheep camps that tell the story of this harsh country.

Moderate difficulty with several rocky sections and creek crossings that can turn muddy after rain. High-clearance 4WD required, though not highly technical. Best run May through October when creek crossings are manageable. Carry extra water and fuel – this is empty country with long stretches between any services. The payoff is solitude and some of the most authentic backcountry left in Wyoming, plus excellent camping along the Green River corridor.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle this trail?

Yes, a stock Wrangler with decent tires will do fine. The mixed surfaces include some rocky sections but nothing requiring major modifications or extreme clearance.

Is this trail passable in early spring?

Avoid March and April due to mud from snowmelt. May through October is your window, with summer being most reliable for dry conditions.

Do I need permits from BLM for this route?

No permits required for the trail itself. Dispersed camping follows standard BLM 14-day rules with no fees.

What's the worst section to expect?

The water crossings can be tricky during spring runoff, and some rocky descents in Red Canyon require careful line choice. Nothing too technical but demands attention.

How much fuel range do I need for this 47-mile route?

Plan for at least 200-mile range from Green River. No services once you leave town, and the nearest gas at Flaming Gorge is limited hours and seasonal.
