Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Critical waterfowl habitat on Utah-Idaho border where 200+ bird species gather during massive spring and fall migrations.

This 18,000-acre refuge spans the marshlands and alkali flats surrounding Bear Lake, creating one of the Intermountain West’s most important stopover points for migrating waterfowl. Peak migration periods see tens of thousands of ducks, geese, swans, and shorebirds, while year-round residents include white-faced ibis, great blue herons, and various raptors. A 12-mile auto tour route provides access to key viewing areas and photo blinds.

The refuge headquarters sits on the Idaho side near Montpelier, with the auto tour route accessible via gravel roads suitable for any vehicle. Best wildlife viewing occurs during spring migration (March-May) and fall migration (September-November). Winter access may be limited due to snow, but cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are permitted when conditions allow.
