Cerro Chirripó Southern Approach Road
High-altitude approach to Costa Rica's highest peak
While most visitors approach Chirripó from San Gerardo de Rivas, this southern route follows forestry roads from the village of Herradura up through páramo grasslands toward the base of Costa Rica’s 12,530-foot peak. The road climbs relentlessly through three distinct ecosystems, passing the Río Chirripó Atlántico headwaters and reaching treeline around 10,000 feet where the landscape transforms into high-altitude grasslands. The final sections require walking, but the road gets you closer to the summit than any other vehicle route.
This is an expert-level high-altitude route demanding serious preparation and vehicle capability. The thin air, sudden weather changes, and rough volcanic rock surfaces challenge both driver and machine. Bring warm clothing, extra fuel, and emergency supplies. Only attempt during dry season (December-April) when conditions are most stable. This route offers solitude unavailable on the popular northern approach, with opportunities for high-altitude camping and unobstructed views of both Pacific and Caribbean slopes.
