Quebrada Grande to Chirripó Cloudbridge Reserve Mountain Track

Cloud forest ascent through sacred indigenous territory

Moderate

This forgotten mountain track climbs from coffee fincas in Quebrada Grande through indigenous Cabécar territory to the Cloudbridge Nature Reserve on Chirripó’s southern flanks. The route follows old pack mule trails and logging roads through secondary growth forest, crossing the Río General drainage before switchbacking up steep volcanic slopes to reach cloudforest at 2,800 meters. Key waypoint is the abandoned Finca Esperanza coffee processing station at kilometer 18, where you’ll ford Quebrada Honda during dry season.

Moderate to difficult depending on season — wet months turn clay sections into axle-deep slop that’ll trap anything without lockers. Need high-clearance 4WD minimum, recovery gear essential, spare fuel for 60+ kilometers. Best tackled April-November when river crossings are manageable. No permits required but respect indigenous boundaries. Reward is camping among cloud forest giants with zero light pollution and views across the entire Talamanca range on clear mornings.
