Red River Ranch Road
Chisholm Trail remnants and Red River crossings
Following century-old cattle drive routes through red clay hills near the Texas border, Red River Ranch Road winds through working ranches and abandoned homesteads where the Chisholm Trail once passed. The 18-mile route starts from Highway 5 east of Madill and crosses Washita Creek twice before reaching the Red River bottoms — expect muddy creek crossings after rain and loose red clay that’ll cake your undercarriage. Historic stone foundations and rusted windmills dot the landscape where cattle barons built empires in the 1880s.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and muddy sections during wet seasons. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, avoiding summer heat and winter ice. No permits needed but much of the route crosses private ranch land — stick to the established road. Pack extra water and recovery gear since cell service is nonexistent for long stretches. This is real Oklahoma ranch country where you’ll feel the weight of frontier history in every red dirt mile.
