Caddo National Grassland Horse Creek Sand Flats

Deep sand prairie where Comanche warriors rode

Moderate

The Horse Creek Sand Flats cut through some of the most untouched tallgrass prairie left in North Texas, where deep sand washes create genuine technical challenges between Bonham and Honey Grove. Named for the creek that disappears and reappears through the sandy terrain, this route follows old cattle trails and military roads used during frontier times, with several creek crossings that turn treacherous after rain. The sandy soil that gives this area its name can swallow a truck to the axles, especially near the old Bonham Creek confluence where early settlers tried and failed to establish a mill.

This is moderate to difficult terrain requiring aired-down tires and experience in sand driving — stock vehicles will struggle in the deeper sections near Mile 8. Best tackled in dry conditions from October through April when the sand firms up and water crossings are predictable. No permits needed, but fuel up in Bonham as services are thin for 40 miles. The payoff is some of the wildest remaining grassland in Texas, with camping allowed anywhere more than 150 feet from water sources.
