Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge Prairie Hills Circuit
Hidden refuge roads through Oklahoma's wild wetlands
Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge’s backcountry road network cuts through 16,000 acres of managed wetlands and upland prairie where few visitors venture beyond the main auto tour route. The Prairie Hills Circuit follows refuge maintenance roads through rolling blackjack oak woodlands and tallgrass prairie, passing seasonal ponds that draw thousands of waterfowl during migration. Key waypoints include the remote Cemetery Hill overlook and the historic CCC-built stone spillway at Pool 12, where you’ll likely encounter wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and if you’re lucky, a bald eagle fishing the shallows.
This easy route requires only high-clearance 2WD but watch for soft spots after rain when clay soils turn slick as grease. Summer heat can be brutal, so spring and fall offer the best wildlife viewing and comfortable temperatures. The 12-mile loop takes half a day with photo stops, and dispersed camping isn’t allowed within refuge boundaries. What you get is a taste of what Oklahoma looked like before the plow—endless grass, big sky, and wildlife that hasn’t read the tourism brochures.
