Paynes Prairie Backcountry Circuit

Florida's Great Plains experience

Moderate

Paynes Prairie stretches for miles like a piece of the Great Plains dropped into North Central Florida — 21,000 acres of grassland, marsh, and scattered hammocks where William Bartram marveled at the ‘Alachua Savanna’ in 1774. The backcountry circuit follows old cattle trails and hunting roads around the perimeter of this massive basin, passing through sections where Seminole leader Paynes established villages and later where his nephew King Payne made his final stand against Andrew Jackson’s forces. You’ll cross Sweetwater Branch and navigate around seasonal ponds that flood and recede with the rains, creating a landscape that changes dramatically throughout the year.

Easy to moderate depending on season and recent weather — the prairie roads turn into quagmires during summer rains but stay passable with high clearance during dry periods. Any decent SUV handles the circuit in dry conditions. Best visited November through March when water levels drop and the weather cools off. Permits required for overnight camping in designated areas only. Cell service decent near Gainesville but fades in the deeper sections. The payoff is seeing Florida as it existed before drainage and development — endless grass under big sky, with wild horses, bison, and gators sharing the same water holes.
