Ocala National Forest Roads

Sand and springs in Florida's biggest forest

Easy

Most folks think Florida’s all beaches and swamp, but the Ocala National Forest throws you 383,000 acres of rolling sand hills, pine forests, and honest-to-god elevation changes. The forest service roads spider web through ancient sand dunes left from when the ocean was 100 feet higher, creating a network of sandy two-tracks that’ll test your momentum and tire pressure knowledge. Forest Road 88 connects to dozens of spur roads leading to hidden springs, primitive campsites, and the occasional black bear sighting.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent rain — dry sand is manageable in any high-clearance vehicle, but wet conditions turn routes into momentum-hungry sugar sand that’ll swallow street tires. Stock 4WD handles it fine with aired-down tires. Best in fall through early spring when it’s cooler and drier. No permits needed, plenty of dispersed camping, and you’re an hour from Gainesville for resupply. It’s not the Rockies, but it’s legitimate backcountry driving in a state that doesn’t give you much of it.
