Arbuckle Mountains Granite Circuit

Ancient granite domes and Oklahoma's geological heart

Moderate

The Arbuckle Mountains rise like ancient monuments from the heart of Oklahoma, their granite cores exposed by eons of erosion. This circuit connects the back roads between Davis and Sulphur, threading through some of the most geologically complex terrain in the state. The route passes Turner Falls, Oklahoma’s largest waterfall, then climbs through granite outcrops and oak woodlands to Buzzard’s Roost, where the view stretches across the entire southern plains. Watch for the abandoned rock quarries near Dougherty—massive granite blocks still bear the marks of long-silent drilling crews.

Moderate difficulty with several steep, rocky climbs that require 4WD and good ground clearance. The limestone sections can be slick when wet, and flash flooding is a real concern near Honey Creek. Stock 4WD trucks handle it fine in dry conditions. Spring brings wildflowers and flowing creeks, while fall offers cooler temperatures and clear views. No permits needed on public lands, but some sections cross private property—stick to established roads. Turner Falls Park charges admission but offers amenities and camping. Fill up in Davis or Sulphur. This is geology you can touch—a hands-on lesson in deep time.
