Karamea Bluff Track
West Coast clifftop camping above the Tasman Sea
The Karamea Bluff Track follows the rugged coastline north of Karamea township, winding through some of the most pristine coastal forest left on New Zealand’s wild West Coast. The track passes through dense groves of nikau palms and massive rata trees before emerging onto windswept bluffs 200 meters above crashing Tasman Sea swells. At Kohaihai Bluff, the track reaches its dramatic terminus where the forest meets vertical limestone cliffs, and on clear days you can see all the way to Farewell Spit.
This is an easy to moderate track suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though the final approach to the bluff requires walking the last kilometer. The track can be muddy year-round thanks to West Coast rain, but it’s passable in all seasons except during major storms. No permits needed, and there’s spectacular clifftop camping at designated spots with pit toilets and water from nearby streams. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why the West Coast still feels like the edge of the world.

Can a standard 2WD SUV handle the Karamea Bluff Track?
Yes, but it needs decent ground clearance — a stock RAV4 or similar high-clearance 2WD is the minimum. Low-slung sedans and unmodified hatchbacks will bottom out on the dirt surface, especially after rain.
Is the track accessible year-round or does it close in winter?
It's open year-round, but the West Coast gets hammered with rain at any time of year. Winter brings more mud and the dirt surface can get slick — check conditions with DOC's Karamea i-SITE before you head out.
Do you need a permit or pay any fees to drive or camp here?
No permit required and no vehicle access fee. Dispersed camping on DOC land is free, but follow Leave No Trace and check current DOC regulations — rules on open fires on the West Coast can change seasonally.
What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?
This is rated easy, so nothing technical — the challenge is the narrow, rutted dirt track with limited passing spots and potential mud after rain. The clifftop approach is exposed, so keep your line and don't rush it in wet conditions.
Is there any cell service, and how far is the nearest fuel from the trailhead?
Zero cell service on the track — plan accordingly and download offline maps before you leave. Karamea township is your last fuel stop, roughly 12km from the trailhead start, and it's the last services for a long stretch of the West Coast.
