Forest Service Road 22 – Breitenbush Hot Springs to Detroit Lake

Hot springs to alpine lake through old-growth wilderness

Moderate

FS Road 22 climbs through some of Oregon’s most pristine old-growth forests, connecting the remote Breitenbush Hot Springs community to Detroit Lake via a winding mountain route that crosses multiple creek drainages. The road passes through the heart of the Mt. Hood National Forest, with several challenging sections including rocky creek crossings at Whitewater Creek and steep grades near the Breitenbush River confluence. Key waypoints include the historic Breitenbush Lodge and the scenic overlook above Detroit Reservoir.

This is a moderate high-clearance route that requires good ground clearance for rocky sections and occasional washouts during spring runoff. Stock 4WD vehicles handle it fine in dry conditions, but the road can become treacherous when wet due to loose volcanic soil. Best traveled May through October when snow has cleared from higher elevations. No permits required, but fuel up in Detroit as services are 40+ miles apart. Multiple dispersed camping opportunities along Whitewater Creek make this a solid weekend exploration of central Oregon’s Cascade backcountry.
