Cobb Valley Road cuts 28km into Kahurangi National Park’s heart, following pack trails used by 1850s gold miners who dragged equipment through these marble peaks on foot. The metalled road climbs steadily through dense beech forest to Cobb Dam—New Zealand’s highest vehicle-accessible dam at 1100m—where the pavement ends and the real adventure begins. Beyond the dam, the Trilobite Track becomes a rough 4WD trail threading through ancient marble karst country, past collapsed mine shafts at Cobb Flat and the remains of stamper batteries that once crushed quartz for gold.
Moderate difficulty with some technical rock sections and tight switchbacks near the reservoir. Any high-clearance vehicle manages the first 24km to the dam, but the Trilobite extension requires proper 4WD with low range for the steep climbs and loose marble scree. Summer only—snow blocks access October through April above 800m. No permits needed for the road, but DoC charges for camping at designated sites. Carry chains in shoulder seasons and extra food; nearest supplies are 90 minutes away in Takaka. The payoff includes pristine alpine lakes, historic mining relics, and some of the clearest night skies in New Zealand.

What's the minimum vehicle to run Cobb Valley Road to Trilobite Track?
High-clearance 4WD is required — not negotiable. A stock Hilux or Land Cruiser with a proper low-range gearbox handles it fine, but a standard AWV crossover or 2WD ute will get you stuck or worse on the rocky climbs and soft sections near the high country.
When is this trail actually open and driveable?
November through April is your window. Snow and ice close the upper sections in winter, and spring snowmelt turns the track into a muddy mess well into October. Even in summer, check with DOC in Takaka before heading in — storm damage can shut it fast.
Do you need a permit or do you pay fees to drive this trail?
No permit required and no trail fee to drive it. It runs through Kahurangi National Park managed by the Department of Conservation — camping is free at designated spots, but pack out everything you bring in.
What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?
The upper climb toward the Cobb Reservoir and into the marble ridge country is where it gets real — loose rock, off-camber shelf road, and steep drops with no barriers. Nothing that demands extreme technical skill, but one bad line or a moment of inattention on a narrow section and you're in trouble. Take it slow and don't rush the descent.
There's no cell service — how far is the nearest fuel and what's the resupply situation?
Takaka is your last stop for fuel, food, and water — fill everything there before you head in. There's no resupply on the trail and zero cell coverage once you leave the valley floor, so a PLB (personal locator beacon) is strongly advised and legally required on many NZ backcountry trips anyway.
