Can a stock Land Cruiser or 4Runner handle Rough Ridge Track without modifications?
Yes — a stock high-clearance 4WD is the minimum and will get through under normal conditions. Lifted rigs aren't required, but a locking diff helps on the loose shingle sections near the ridge.
When does Rough Ridge Track close, and is snow a real risk?
The track is best run November through March. Outside those months, snow and ice on the high sections above 3,500ft can make it impassable or dangerous. Even in summer, conditions can change fast in Canterbury high country — check local weather before you go.
Do I need a permit to drive Rough Ridge Track, and how do I get one?
Yes, the route crosses private station land and permission is required from the landowner before you drive it. Contact the station directly in advance — showing up at the gate without prior arrangement will get you turned away.

Fuel up in Lake Tekapo before you leave — there's nothing on route and the nearest pump after that is a solid drive away. Carry all your drinking water; the stream crossings on track are not reliably safe to drink without filtration. A UHF radio or PLB is strongly advised given the zero cell coverage across the entire route.
