Totara Valley to Tasman Bay Circuit

The Totara Valley road winds through some of the South Island’s most isolated country, starting from the Cobb Dam and snaking through primeval beech forests toward the Tasman wilderness. This 40-kilometer loop connects remote valleys via the challenging Gouland Downs crossing, where marble karst country creates washouts and sinkholes that’ll test your line choice. The Aorere River crossing near the halfway point runs deep after rain — locals know to check conditions at Collingwood before heading in.

This is proper backcountry driving requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear. The marble country between Mount Burnett and Mount Peel turns into axle-deep mud traps during wet months (May through September), making summer the only sensible season. No fuel or supplies once you leave Takaka, and cell service vanishes after the first valley. But you’ll earn access to pristine camping spots beside unnamed creeks and some of the clearest night skies on the South Island.
