Canol Heritage Trail — Norman Wells to NWT-Yukon Border

WWII ghost road into the Mackenzie Mountains.

Extreme

Built in a desperate wartime push between 1942 and 1944 to pipe oil from Norman Wells to Whitehorse, the Canol Heritage Trail is now a raw wilderness route that has been largely reclaimed by the land. From Norman Wells — accessible only by air or winter ice road — the route climbs southwest through the Mackenzie Mountains, crossing the Prohibition Creek drainage, Twitya River, and the stunning alpine country around the Canol Road summits before reaching the NWT-Yukon border near the Yukon’s North Canol Road junction. Rusting WWII pipeline infrastructure, abandoned equipment, and forgotten camps litter the route. This is genuine expedition territory — the trail is not maintained, bridges are long gone, and river crossings are deep and cold.

Do not attempt this without serious preparation. Expert-level 4WD with aggressive tires, full recovery kit, high-lift jack, and multiple spare parts is the minimum. River crossings — including the Twitya — can stop or destroy unprepared vehicles; water levels must be checked before committing. The NWT side has no services whatsoever after Norman Wells; carry all fuel, food, and spares for a self-sufficient 10-to-14-day expedition. The Parks Canada heritage trail designation covers foot travel; vehicle access depends on seasonal conditions and land status. Best window is late July through August. The payoff is absolute: Mackenzie Mountain wilderness that almost nobody sees.
