Wrigley to Fort Norman Winter Ice Road — Mackenzie River Overland Crossing

Mackenzie Valley winter driving at its loneliest.

Difficult

North of Wrigley, the Mackenzie Valley closes in and the spruce gets thicker. The winter road connecting Wrigley to Fort Norman (Tulita) is an extension of the Mackenzie Valley winter road system that gives isolated Dene communities their only overland link to supplies for a narrow window each year. The route tracks close to the Mackenzie River corridor, crosses frozen creek drainages including the Camsell River area, and passes through boreal terrain where moose outnumber vehicles on any given day. This is not a groomed highway — it’s a compacted snow and ice track maintained by territorial resources with minimal signage and no guard rails over creek crossings. Overflow ice is the constant threat; sections that look solid can be floating on a thin shelf above running water.

This road is open to the public during the territorial winter road season, typically late December through March, though opening dates shift with freeze-up conditions and are confirmed by the GNWT Department of Infrastructure. Minimum vehicle is a reliable 4WD with winter tires, a full spare, extra fuel (there are no gas stations between communities), a satellite communicator, and cold-weather survival gear for at least 72 hours. Cell service is zero between Wrigley and Tulita. The drive rewards patience — you’ll see wolves, ravens, and frozen river landscapes that most people will never lay eyes on. Tulita is a small Dene community; be respectful and fuel up when you can.
