Mackenzie Valley Winter Road — Wrigley to Tulita

The Mackenzie Valley's frozen lifeline road.

Expert

Between roughly December and March, the GNWT opens a winter road linking Wrigley south to Norman Wells via Tulita — a stretch of frozen Mackenzie River, overland muskeg track, and lake crossings that serves as the only surface lifeline for communities that see zero wheeled traffic in summer. The Mackenzie River sections are the ones to respect: pressure ridges can appear overnight, overflow ice hides under snow with no warning, and the river moves whether it looks frozen or not. Tulita, a Sahtu Dene community of around 500 people, sits roughly 280 kilometres north of Wrigley. The country between is almost entirely roadless wilderness — boreal forest, frozen sloughs, and occasional glimpses of the Franklin Mountains to the east.

This route demands a properly equipped expedition truck or SUV: quality winter tires minimum (tracks preferred for long hauls), full cold-weather recovery kit, extra fuel for the full run, a satellite communicator, and the patience to wait out closures. GNWT posts daily road conditions — don’t move on a closed road. No permit required but the road opens and closes on the government’s schedule, not yours. Fuel in Wrigley is limited; Norman Wells is your resupply. This isn’t a joyride — it’s a genuine working ice road through the subarctic, and it earns every kilometre of bragging rights.
