Wrigley to Fort Simpson Ice Road — Mackenzie River Winter Route

Drive on a frozen river or don't drive at all.

Expert

Every winter, when temperatures drop far enough to freeze the Mackenzie River to sufficient thickness, the NWT Department of Infrastructure grooms an ice road linking Wrigley south to Fort Simpson. This isn’t an adventure gimmick — it’s a lifeline for communities that otherwise rely on expensive air freight. The road runs directly on river ice for much of its length, passing beneath river bluffs and through boreal flats that in summer are completely inaccessible by vehicle. The creak and groan of ice under a loaded truck at -30°C is a sound that stays with you. Keep speeds under 30 km/h to avoid resonance waves that can crack the surface, and never stop on a bridge section.

This route is strictly a winter proposition — typically January through March, depending on ice thickness reports from the GNWT. Check ice road status before you go; the government posts daily updates. Minimum vehicle is a well-maintained 4WD with a block heater, winter tires rated to -40°C, and a full emergency kit including sleeping bag rated to extreme cold, fire-starting supplies, and enough fuel to get out if the road closes. No permit required but respect all posted load and speed limits. Cell service is absolutely zero. This one is for serious, experienced cold-weather drivers only.
