Chemin de la Rivière Chaudière — Réserve faunique des Chaudière-Appalaches Highland Circuit
Chaudière headwaters, zero crowd, all mud.
The upper Chaudière River drainage in the Chaudière-Appalaches region doesn’t get the same press as Gaspésie or the Laurentians, but that’s exactly why it’s worth knowing. This circuit follows a network of MNRF forestry roads south of Lac-Mégantic, pushing through spruce and fir stands where the river narrows into boulder-choked runs. The road quality shifts constantly — firm gravel on the managed sections, soft clay ruts where logging trucks have chewed through after rain, and at least two unsigned fords across seasonal tributaries that demand you get out and probe before crossing. The Chaudière headwaters area near Saint-Romain is the turning point, and it earns it.
Moderate difficulty overall, but rain turns the clay sections genuinely nasty — budget for recovery time if you’re running solo. A stock 4WD with good all-terrain tires handles it in dry conditions; add a hi-lift jack and traction boards for shoulder season. Best window is June through September, though July logging traffic peaks heavy on weekdays — go midweek in August for quieter roads. Fuel in Lac-Mégantic before you head out; there’s nothing usable on-route. No permit required for transit, but check ZEC Beauce-Paroisse access rules before camping overnight. You come out having seen a corner of Quebec that most overlanders skip entirely.
