Schenck Brook Road
Following the brook to forgotten logging camps
Schenck Brook Road cuts deep into Maine’s working forest, following its namesake brook for twelve miles through dense spruce and fir. The unpaved track passes remnants of old logging operations, including rusted cable anchors and overgrown skidder trails, while the brook tumbles over granite ledges alongside your wheels. Near mile seven, you’ll ford the brook itself at a shallow rocky crossing where old-timers used to water their horses.
This moderate route demands high clearance for the rocky sections and water crossing, though any capable 4×4 can handle it in dry conditions. Spring brings washouts and deep mud, making late summer through early fall your best bet. No services exist for sixty miles once you leave the main road, so pack food and fuel. The payoff is pure North Woods solitude and some of the best brook trout water in western Maine.
