Shelby Farms Park Chickasaw Bluff Trail
Urban wilderness with river bluff views
The Chickasaw Bluff Trail cuts through 4,500 acres of reclaimed farmland and native forest in Memphis’s crown jewel park system. This route follows old farm roads and newly cut paths through hardwood bottoms, past Heart Lake, and up to the ancient Chickasaw Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River valley. The trail includes several technical climbs through loose clay and root-bound sections that can challenge even experienced drivers during wet conditions.
This is a moderate trail best suited for stock SUVs with decent ground clearance, though the clay sections after rain will test traction control systems. Open year-round but avoid during wet seasons when the clay becomes impassable soup. No permits required and camping isn’t allowed, but the proximity to Memphis makes this perfect for half-day adventures. You’ll get killer river valley views and a surprising taste of wilderness without leaving the city limits.
