Wolf River Greenway Ghost River Technical Loop
Memphis' muddiest 4x4 challenge in Wolf River bottoms
The Ghost River section of Memphis’ Wolf River system runs through some of the muddiest, most unpredictable terrain in Shelby County. This technical loop follows maintenance roads and hunting access trails through the Wolf River Wildlife Management Area, crossing multiple tributaries and navigating deep sand deposits left by decades of flooding. The route passes the abandoned Raleigh-LaGrange railway bridge, a rusted monument to Memphis’ industrial past now claimed by kudzu and coyotes.
This is expert-level terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD with aggressive tires and recovery gear. Expect axle-deep mud holes, water crossings up to 24 inches, and soft sand that’ll swallow street tires. Best tackled during dry spells from late summer through early fall when water levels drop. No permits needed, but check hunting seasons. Bring a winch, tow straps, and plenty of water—cell service dies the moment you leave the main road. This is Memphis’ closest thing to true backcountry driving.
