Hyland River Road — Upper Liard Plateau to Hyland River Headwaters
River fords, wolves, and zero safety net.
Southeast Yukon doesn’t get many visitors, and the Hyland River Road makes sure of it. Branching off the Robert Campbell Highway south of Watson Lake, this track climbs into the Liard Plateau following the Hyland River drainage through prime caribou and wolf country. The road was carved for mineral exploration and it shows — steep grades, exposed shale sidehills, multiple unbridged river fords, and no maintenance to speak of. The Hyland River crossings in the middle section are the crux: fast-moving, knee-deep in a good year, thigh-deep and dangerous after August rain. Scout every crossing on foot before you drive it.
This is legitimate expert territory. Locked front and rear axles, a snatch block, high-lift jack, and a capable recovery partner are not optional. Solo runs are genuinely dangerous — the nearest help is hours away and satellite comms are your only lifeline. Best window is July through mid-August after spring snowmelt subsides. No permits, no fees, no services between Watson Lake and wherever you camp. The payoff is access to some of the most untouched river valley wilderness in the southern Yukon — the kind of country that resets your baseline for what remote actually means.
