Kinbasket Lake North Shore Technical Route
Technical reservoir route for serious 4x4 builds
This gnarly route hugs the north shore of Kinbasket Lake, Columbia River’s massive reservoir, through terrain that would challenge a mountain goat. Built originally as logging access, the road now serves as a technical playground threading between rocky bluffs and the lake’s ever-changing shoreline. The crux section hits around Kimbasket Creek where washouts and rockfall create a proper rock-crawling challenge that’ll test your spotter and your undercarriage clearance.
Difficult rating demands experienced drivers with built rigs—lockers recommended, skid plates mandatory. Summer only when lake levels stabilize, typically July through September. No cell service for 140 kilometers, so satellite communication is wise for emergencies. Fuel range planning critical with the nearest station at Valemount. Reward is complete solitude, excellent fishing, and camping spots with views across the Columbia Valley that few will ever see. This is proper wilderness wheeling.
