Snowcrest Range Backcountry Loop
Challenging high-altitude mining loop above treeline
This demanding loop cuts through the heart of Montana’s Snowcrest Range, following old mining roads and ridge lines above treeline. The route starts near Lima and climbs relentlessly to over 9,000 feet, passing abandoned mining camps and offering sweeping views of the Centennial Valley. The technical crux comes at Snowcrest Peak’s eastern approach, where loose rock and steep grades test both driver skill and vehicle capability.
Difficult rating reflects high altitude, technical rock sections, and rapidly changing weather. Requires modified 4WD with good tires and recovery points. July through September only, as snow lingers well into summer at elevation. No permits but inform someone of your route — cell service is nonexistent and rescue would be problematic. The reward is some of Montana’s most spectacular high country and excellent camping spots with 360-degree views across three states.
