Medicine Lodge Road (Forest Road 258)

Ancient petroglyphs and natural hot springs

Moderate

Medicine Lodge Road follows an ancient Native American trail turned pioneer wagon route through the rugged Beaverhead Mountains, ending at Medicine Lodge Creek where centuries-old Shoshone petroglyphs cover limestone cliffs. The 16-mile forest road climbs from sagebrush flats through dense lodgepole pine forests, crossing multiple creek fords before reaching the archaeological site where over 300 petroglyphs and pictographs tell stories of buffalo hunts and spiritual visions. Natural hot springs bubble up near the creek, creating an oasis that has drawn travelers for millennia.

This moderate route demands high-clearance 4WD for several rocky creek crossings and steep, rutted climbs through timber. Best tackled May through October when snow clears the higher elevations, though early season means muddy conditions. No permits required, but respect the sacred petroglyphs – they’re protected archaeological sites. Pack extra water and recovery gear; cell service disappears once you leave the valley. The payoff is a genuine slice of Montana history where you can soak in hot springs beneath ancient rock art.
