Selway-Bitterroot Frank Church River of No Return Access Road
Idaho's most remote wilderness penetration route
This rugged 47-mile track penetrates the heart of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, following old mining roads and pack trails through some of Idaho’s most remote country. The route starts at Corn Creek boat launch and winds through narrow canyons, crossing Marsh Creek, Big Creek, and the Middle Fork Salmon River multiple times. Drivers navigate washouts from spring floods, boulder fields, and steep climbs over Monumental Creek Pass at 7,800 feet.
This is expert-level terrain requiring full skid plates, recovery gear, and serious mechanical skills. Multiple water crossings can run three feet deep during snowmelt, and cell service vanishes for the entire route. Best tackled July through September when river levels drop. The reward is access to pristine wilderness camping, natural hot springs at Sunflower Flat, and some of the most untouched country left in the lower 48.
